27 November 2009- People landing at Manchester Airport can save time by using facial recognition systems at the airport.
These high tech systems were recently launched at Terminal 2 after a successful installation at Terminal 1 in the previous year. These facial recognition systems allow travelers with an automated secure route through the UK border.
Over 300,000 people have already used them at the airport. Any UK or EU passenger aged 18 or older who has an electronically chipped biometric passport, issued since 2006 can opt for the self service gates instead of the regular manned queuing border control.

Fingerprint checks at the border introduced
From the 30 November 2009 the UKBA will commence fingerprint checks at the border for travelers with Biometric Visas. When arriving in the UK people with biometric visas will have the fingerprints scanned at border control. The passenger's right hand thumb and first finger will usually be scanned and checked against the scans given in visa application process.
The reason for this process is to verify that the person entering the UK is the same person who applied for the Visa.

Tier 2 Changes give British Workers Better Chance to apply for Jobs
24 November 2009- The UK resident labour test of the Tier 2 (Sponsored Skilled Work) will be extended to four weeks for all jobs. The reason is to support British Workers searching for jobs during the current economic circumstances. This is another clear example of how the UKBA and UK in general is trying to minimize immigration numbers to the UK.
These changes will apply to all jobs that commence on or after 14 December 2009, any advertising already undertaken will not need to re advertise.
The four weeks will not need to run continuously, employers will be able to advertise skilled jobs for shorter durations initially, this will allow resident workers a chance to first apply and where there are no resident workers the labor test should be tested for a further 2 weeks. This makes the entire process up to four weeks before a UK employer can employ a migrant worker.

Identity Cards for foreign nationals
2 Nov 2009 The UKBA has issued more than 100,000 identity cards for foreign nationals, majority of which are to migrants extending their stay as students or spouses.
If regulations laid down this week are approved by the Govt then migrants from outside the EEA will be issued with cards when they extend their permissions to stay for more than six months under Tier 2 of the Points Based System. This means they will need to have their biometrics (fingerprints and photograph) as part of their application to stay.
