The Govt has confirmed that 8 occupations will be removed from the current shortage occupation list.
Once these 8 occupations are removed from the list the Govt reports that the number of positions available to foreign workers in the UK will be reduced from 500,000 to about 230,000.
In addition to this announcement the UK govt also confirmed that they will be removing 71 professions from the current approved list of 192 jobs under the Tier 2 Visa Category as they have found these to be below graduate level.
The Migration Advisory committee has reported that of the 8,400 certificates of sponsorship issued to foreign workers in 2010 65 % of these would not have qualified with the new rules coming in April.

Higher Skills Levels for UK Shortage Occupation List
8 new job titles were recommended to be removed from the UK Shortage Occupation List by the Migration Advisory Committee.
MAC have already suggested that 71 occupations be removed from the qualifying list for Tier 2 . These steps are set to comply with the Govt's aim of raising the level required to NQF 4 and above.
MAC has suggested removing more job titles including skilled meat trimmers, skilled meat boners, high integrity pipe welders and senior care workers HOWEVER care home managers and nurses working in care homes will not be affected as these jobs are already at NQF Level 4.
MAC also confirmed that fewer number of chefs are skilled to NQF level 4 and above and made further recommendations that only those chef positions requiring a 5 year relevant experience period and a salary of 28,260 GBP annually.

New Tier 2 Update- Shorter Eligible Occupation List
07.02.2011 The Migration Advisory Committee has suggested that a shorter list of eligible occupations should apply under Tier 2 of the UK Immigration Points Based System.
The shorter list will now cover 39% of the skilled jobs on the UK Job Market instead of the 56% currently.
Civil Engineers, Finance and Investment Analysts,Teachers and Nurses are among those occupations still on the list however occupations like retail managers, salon managers, laboratory technicians and real estate agents are o longer on the list.

UK Tier 2 Limit and Implications for UK Sponsors
As discussed recently the UKBA has introduced an interim limit on the number of applications under Tier 1 and Tier 2 of the UK's Point Based System.
The UKBA has released guidance that sets out the implications of this limit for already existing UK Sponsors and New Sponsors:
The UKBA has reserved a small amount of Certificates of Sponsorship available for cases that are deemed exceptional. As a sponsor you may request a Certificate of Sponsorship from this reserved amount if you are:
A new Sponsor licensed during the interim limit or an existing sponsor that requires more Certificates of Sponsorship in special circumstances during the period of the temporary cap.
Existing Sponsors will all receive a letter informing them of their Certificate Allocation for the period of the Temporary Cap.
The method that the UKBA calculated the limit with was to assess each Sponsor's Usage of the Certificate of Sponsorship system from 19 July 2009 until 31 March 2010. The UKBA then applied a reduction to each sponsor who used 2 or more Certificates during this period. This calculation then leaves a number of unallocated Certificates for New Sponsors and those existing sponsors who may have special requirements.
This means that some sponsors will not be given any number of Certificates for this period, the sponsor remains licensed by the UKBA and are able to continue sponsoring any existing migrants that have a valid leave BUT they will not be able to assign any new Certificates to Migrants or to existing employees that may need an extension.
Any Sponsor that has a zero allocation allowance can apply for exceptional circumstances BUT the number of exceptional Cases will be limited and there is no guarantee that a request for any extra certificates will be approved.
Any existing sponsor that has been downgraded to a B-Rating will automatically receive a zero number of certificates until they make the necessary arrangements to improve their rating. These sponsors will still be licensed and continue employing migrants BUT will not be able to allocate any new Certificates or apply for any extensions.
